In 1963 a monument was built on the river back in Limbang close to the spot where the first Z craft landed. On the memorial the names of the five Royal Marines and the four Royal Malaysian Police Constables who died during the Limbang action were placed. The unavailing of the monument was attended by many of the Royal Marines who took part in the assault.

Because of various river side developments over the last 40 years the monument fell into disrepair. Yorkie Walker (M Coy) visited Limbang in October 2001 and with the help of local Limbang resident Chua Eng Hin found the area around the monument under heavy construction. The monument lay protected under a blue plastic sheet. A new road runs very close to the water front.

In mid 2002 work was completed on the river side project and access to the monument was once again possible. The area around the monument was rebuilt to include a small garden and lights. Royal Marine Chris Morgan visited Limbang in June.

During my last trip to Limbang I visited the memorial on the river bank. The Memorial was in good condition and the location has been spruced up. There was minor damage to the brass work lettering, which could be repaired. The only obvious damage to brass plate was that there were letters missing from the name of Marine Gerald Kiers. These photos were taken on 8th June 02

As you may recall I was unable to attend the evening dinner in Manchester because I had to fly out to Brunei that night to work on the tracking course. On completion of the course I visited Limbang to pay my respects along with the now DS1 of the Jungle Warfare Wing (Capt 'Matt' Churchward RM) and John Bennetts (Regt Capt RLC) who now works for the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and was involved quite heavily in the British Legion.

I also laid a wreath for the CO on behalf of the Officers and Men of 42 Commando RM. I have attached some photos of the event. We also managed to invite the Limbang Police Superintendent George and Asst Superintendent Chiew to accompany us to the memorial to pay their respects. You will see from the photos that the memorial has been well restored. The plate has had the letters of some of the names restored, where over time they have fallen off. Hence the reason the Commanding Officer didn't want to go along with the plan of bringing the plate back to Bickleigh. You will see why from the photos. Superintendent George showed us the bullet holes that are still in the gates of the police station . Once again thank you for the invitation to Manchester.

On the 41st anniversary. Chua retured again.
Today,12th December 2003 is yet another significant moment for the Limbang folks to pay their tribute and salute for the loss of lives of our heroes, the British Royal Marine 42 Commando and the Sarawak police Force, who defended and liberated Limbang during the 1962 Brunei Rebellions.
To commemorate this auspicious occasion, Mr.Tan,William Lau and few of my friends together with several Police Personnel we've lay a wreath at the monument which is situated right infront of the Limbang Central Police Station, as to mark the bravery, splendid example of good morale, devotion to duty and aggressive spirit of those soldiers who had sacrificed their lives in action during this meaningful causes.
