SITREP on Limbang Today

One is greeted at the water taxi landing stage by a very large 'WELCOME TO LIMBANG', this is also the area in which the members of the landing force would know as THE CUSTOMS  HOUSE,   across the road is the market area, which looks as if it has not changed very much over the years.

You can see the landing area to the right of the customs house but this has had a pedestrian walkway built along the shore line.  The covered walkway is split in two, with the centre piece being the memorial to those members of Lima Company 42 Commando RM  and police officers   who lost their lives in this action.

The memorial is in a  poor state of repair but as I type, it is in the process of being renovated and I hope it is completed by the end of the summer period.

There has been a children's play area to the left of the memorial which is rather poinant. As you stand  with your back to the river,  the  Police Station  is just across the road from the memorial, looking very bright and clean (the police on duty the day I visited the site were more than helpful in direction me to the various places within the town).

There have  been some new buildings put up around the town (including a rather large pink coloured hotel which  is the tallest building in town). The building that Tony Daker and colleagues destroyed has been  replaced. Everything else is as much as it was in those dark days.

Across the river from LIMBANG is still a thriving village, with constant water taxi movement to and from LIMBANG. Most of the large trees are still to be seen and the jungle  comes down to the rear of the shopping area  of the market.  The communication masts are still situated on the top of the hill where the lights of Brunei town can be seen,  they are still painted red and white for ease of identification.

The people of Limbang are very friendly and are more than willing to talk to you, especially if they know that you are english.  They are doing their best to ensure that the memorial is looked after in the correct manner and as long as I am in Brunei , I will also be keeping a close eye on it.

2002 Return visit to Limbang
By Bob "Dixie" Dean
I joined the Royal Marines in 1959 (with a number of RM18604)  and served up until 1983 (with a number of PO18604S). I served in 42 Cdo RM for all of the Borneo and Malaysia campaigns plus the final faze of the withdrawal from Aden.  As a young Marine with an SQ of Heavy Weapons ( Vickers & Mortars ) I was involved with the assult on Limbang in 1962 with ' L' Coy RM.  In March of this year my family and I took a nostalgic trip back to the Far East to visit some of the places I had served, Limbang, Bangor & Lawas from my first tour of duty, Lundu, Bau & Kuching from 2nd tour and Kalabakan & Serondong from 3rd tour. We used  hovercraft  during this tour.  My family and I would be staying at the Brunei Garrison at SERIA while visiting the area

We arrived in Limbang on 1st April 2002 at about 1230hrs by fast boat from BSB (new name for Brunei City), great trip .On arrival at Limbang went straight to the police station. The policemen where very helpful and  they told me where the monument was. Went to it, it was the new one, yes it has been erected on a new promenade, the area around it is still like a building site. There is one thing about the monument it is facing the road not the promenade so in future it will be a bit dangerous taking photo's. Martin Spirit had given me the name of his Limbang contact, Chua Eng Hin, and we called in on him. Chua was delighted to see us and straight away took us on a guided tour of Limbang. Very nice chap Chua. He has gone out of his way to help other ex Marines who have visited Limbang in the past.
After the tour of Limbang Chua took us  to Temberong (Border of Brunei / Sabah), then to the Kampong of Palauwan ( Hero's Village ). This is the place where ex-members of the TNKU now live. Then believe it or not we went to the house of the Pungalu / Pangalu (not sure of the spelling) Salleh Sambas  ( the leader of the TNKU of 1962), he welcomed us into his house. I think the picture tells the rest of the story.

We left Limbang at 1630hrs on the last fast boat. I dought if I will ever get the chance to visit again but it was a very eventful adventure, but then again I might go back
